ECBA Carpet Bowls Festival 2010
Monday 10th to Friday 14th May 2010

This was the seventh year for this event and once again it was vey well supported, sixty rinks, one hundred and twenty eight pairs and one hundred and forty seven singles took part, the best entry to date.

The standard of bowling seems to get better every year and this was no exception with many of the more fancied bowlers falling by the wayside we were sure to have some new names on the trophies.

In the singles Sally Goodrich (Suffolk) & Doreen Crammon (South Tyneside) were beaten in the semi-finals, Michael Laydon & Martin Cambell both from

Sunderland played each other in the final with Martin winning a thrilling game that wasn’t settled until the final end.

In the pairs Jan Squares & Linda Cornell (Cambridgeshire) and Wal Kittle & Chris Cook (Suffolk) were beaten in their semi finals. In the final Kathy Shepherd & Jenny Parnell (Norfolk) had been playing very well and were part of the winning rink last year came up against an inspired pair of Michael Laydon & Martin Cambell from (Sunderland), despite changing carpets they both kept up their high standards to take an early lead Kathy & Jenny started to get to grips with the carpet but it was to late to haul back the deficit and Michael & Martin ran out deserved winners.

In the rinks Mark Hammond, Dirk & Doreen Vettewinkel and Vince Miller (Essex & Durham) along with Rita & Mike Daniels and Kay & Peter Masters (Suffolk) who won this event in 2007 were beaten semi finalists.

The final was contested by Neil Jolly, Ally Goodrich, Sally & Jim Goodrich (Suffolk). Neil & Ally have been part of the winning rink on three previous occasions; they played Alex & Enid Russell, Daniel Bushe & Marie Boyton (Essex).

This was a final packed with emotion for the Essex rink as Marie’s husband Peter sadly died earlier this year and would have been the fourth member of the rink, I know Marie was very undecided about coming to the event but the tremendous support from family, friends and fellow bowlers persuaded Marie to give it a try and what a good decision that prove to be.

Many people thought that the Suffolk rink would be favourites to win but Marie and her team had other ideas and refused to be second best they played with great skill and determination throughout and managed to hold off a very competitive team to run out winners.

As a footnote Peter Boyton was the ECBA vice chairman and will be greatly missed but he would have been so proud of Marie and his friends for their achievement.
