On Sunday 25th
September, for the first time since 2019, Cambridgeshire hosted
what has previously been the Six Counties event, but this year,
with Bedfordshire not in a position to field a team, it was down
to just 5 counties. Hopefully, with Bedfordshire's league now
about to resume after a long break, we will see them return.
Session 1
Suffolk led the way, but only because all of their blocks played,
while all the other teams only had have their blocks playing.
They picked up 3 wins over Norfolk, and one over Cambridgeshire.
Cambs, took two
wins over Suffolk, and it was the same for Essex over Hertfordshire.
Norfolk were unlucky two lose three close games against Suffolk. |

Session 2
Suffolk remained top by taking 3 tight wins over Hertfordshire,
while Cambridgeshire, with 2 wins and a loss against Norfolk,
were still well set with games in hand.
Norfolk picked
up their first points, picking up 6 in their 6 games against
Essex and Cambs. |

Session 3
With Cambridgeshire taking their turn at having a session where
all their blocks were playing, they took 5 points against Hertfordshire,
and 4 against Norfolk, closing the gap to Suffolk, who won 2
and lost 1 against Essex, to just one point. |

Session 4
Hertfordshire took their turn to play their full team, and picked
up 8 points, their best session by far after a very slow start
to the day.
That included
2 wins out of 3 against Norfolk, and the same against Cambridgeshire,
who, with Suffolk winning all 3 games against Essex, had now
dropped 5 points behind the leaders. |

Session 5
Essex had their chance to improve their position with all 6 blocks
playing, and did just that, picking up 2 wins each against Cambridgeshire
and Hertfordshire. Meanwhile Suffolk took 3 convincing wins over
Norfolk.
And with those
games played all the teams were on and equal footing. Suffolk
now had a 9 point lead over Cambridgeshire, with 12 still on
offer, and 3 games still to be played between the two of them. |

Session 6
Cambridgeshire had to entirely sit out the penultimate round,
which mean that Suffolk had the chance to wrap things up with
their games against Hertfordshire. Two wins would do it for them,
and that's what they got.
Norfolk, meanwhile,
took all 3 wins over Essex, which meant that Essex, Norfolk and
Herts were now seperated by a single point. |

Session 7
The final session saw Cambridgeshire and Suffolk take 3 points
each from their matches, while Cambs also won all 3 games against
Essex, and Norfolk more than settled the squabble over third
place by taking all 3 of ther games against Herts.
Essex were no
doubt happy to avoid finishing bottom, a position which was left
for Hertfordshire to surprisingly fill, which can be explained
by the fact that they were missing a few key players, while Norfolk
will rightly be more than happy with having secured a comfortable
3rd place.
Cambridgeshire
can content themselves with the knowledge that they were the
only county to beat Suffolk overall, taking 7 of the 12 points
on offer, but will rue having let them pull away in the day's
middle session.
In the end, what
really made the difference for Suffolk were their results against
Essex, Herts, and Norfolk, dropping only 2 out of a combined
18 games. And the overall win meant that in lieu of a Eastern
Counties League, which wasn't played over the previous winter,
Suffolk would represent the East in the pre-Nationals North v
East match. |
