2011 DAVID CORNWALL TROPHY

On Sunday 27th March the finals of the Cambridgeshire David Cornwell Trophy were held at Littleport Leisure Centre.

8 teams from around the county had qualified for the finals and were drawn into 2 groups of 4, playing pairs and rink’s matches to decide the group winners and eventual finalists.

The early pace setters in Group 1 were Over who after the 6 pairs matches had only dropped 1 point and held a 4 point advantage over second place North Luffenham.

In group 2 it was a closer affair with Swaffham Prior holding a 1 point advantage over Littleport Village Hall.

The next phase of the finals was the rinks matches and with Over needing to win one of their 3 games to progress to the final they produced a clean sweep to finish with 17 points. In group 2 it was Swaffham Prior that held their nerve to progress to the final with 14 points.

In the final the first pairs match saw Ian Blunsten and Amy Folkes beat David Folkes and Colin Dalton 8-4. In the other pairs final Jamie and Dawn Smith were tied 5-5 with Michael Aves and Ivan Perry and on the last end with Over holding the one shot to give them the Championship the Swaffham Prior skip with his final wood produced an outrageous wick to trail the jack for a 3 and thus ensuring that the rinks match would decide who would be champions.

In the final rinks match Over flew out the blocks and score a 5 and 4 on the first 2 ends to put them in pole position, a lead that they would never lose and eventually ran out 12-2 winners.
