Fours 2024/25
Sunday 23rd March saw 13 entries
in the Fours at Barton Le Clay. The teams were drawn into 3 groups
with 2 byes, with the Winners plus the best Runner-Up would progress
to the Semi-Finals.
Group A
After 2 games a win and draw had S Bollins (Tod) and R
Spenley (SE) tied on 3 pts each. The Toddington rink then
went unbeaten to win the group on 7pts but the Slip End
versus J Greaves (Sil) match would determine group runner-up.
Silsoe won leaving them in the mix on 6pts and +17 shots.
Group B
This Group saw G Savage (Clp) and P Webster tied
on 3pts after 2 games. Clophill then won their final 2 games
to take the group on 7pts, but a loss to J Blythe (Bar)
saw Toddington out and left Barton on 6pts and
+9.
Group C
After 2 games this group was tight but C Still (Bar) was
on 4pts, with the others all losing a game. A win in the next
took Barton to 6pts but chased by K Cockings (Tur).
The last game saw Turvey play Barton, and a 10 -1 Turvey win
took them to 6 pts, and through as group winners on 6pts +10
leaving Barton on 6 pts but only +3.
Semi-Finals
S Bollins (Tod) v G Savage (Clp)
A single on first end to Clophill was then matched, with 2 to
Toddington on the next 2 ends, to lead 2-1. The 4th end saw Toddington
take 3 shots to ease away 5-1 then take 3 further singles to
put the defending champions into the final as 8-1 victors.
K Cockings (Tur) v J Greaves (Sil)
Silsoe were under pressure straight away and 5-0 down after 4
ends. They did take a single on the 5th end but another single
and a dead end saw Turvey win 6-1.
Final
Sue Bollins, Fran Hibberd, Kate Tillcock, Linda OBrien
(Toddington) v Keith Cockings, Paul Hurren, Roger Albery, Matthew
Hatton (Turvey)
This was looking like a very closely matched pair of rinks, with
the defending champions playing a very experienced Turvey rink.
End 1 saw Turvey take 3 shots to win the first end. The 2nd set
the tone of the game as the skips were so close that the jack
was pinned in, resulting in a dead end. Toddington then took
a single on the 3rd to trail 1-3, but they then lost a single
as Turvey's lead was restored to 3 shots, but it was nip and
tuck, with all the bowlers being so close in.
After 6 ends Turvey only just
led 4-3, with the next ends seeing a pair to each, meaning that
Turvey maintained that slender lead at 6-5.
The last end was tight. With
the skips left with a bowl each to play, Sue held 2 shots. She
narrowly missed a good draw leaving Keith 2 down and last bowl
of the match to play. He attacked one of his own bowls, pushing
it into the head, and with his own following in Turvey took 2
shots to win 8-5.
Well done both teams, it was a fantastic final. Congratulations
to Toddington on a stern defence, and well done Turvey.
Thanks for a fabulous final, and to all who make the day possible.

Triples 2024/25
Sunday 24th February saw 20 teams
at Barton Le Clay for the Triples. They were drawn into 4 groups
of 5 teams with the winners of each progressing to the semi-finals.
Group A
Barton (C Still) were on 4pts after 2 games with all the
others on one win. They went on to win their third, and they
finished with a fourth, to go through undefeated
Group B
Turvey (A Hatton) were on 4pts at halfway, along with Wootton
(V Whyatt Routh). The 3rd game between both teams saw Turvey
win 8-3, and they finished off their group games with another,
to make it 4 out of 4.
Group C
Turvey (K Cockings) had nervy start, 7-1 down in first match,
they recovered to win 9-7. After 3 games were on 6pts with Westoning
(P Waghorn), but final game between the two, saw Turvey win 10-2,
to progress.
Group D
This was the tightest group of thr day with Westoning
(M Jackson) , Clophill (G Savage), Barton (J Blythe),
and Toddington (P Webster) all on 4pts after 3 games.
Clophill won their final game to sit on 6pts but the Toddington
team lost leaving Westoning to challenge in last game with Barton,
but the two teasms knocked each othr out with a draw, leaving
Clophill to progress.
Semi-Final 1
Barton (Carol Still, Garth Hemmings, Neil Rixon) v Turvey (Mathew
Hatton, Paul Hurren, Andrew Hatton)
This looked to be a close game between two evenly matched teams.
After 5 ends Barton had a 5-2 lead, but then Turvey rallied,
and pegged them back with 2 singles to trail 5-4. A single on
the final end to Turvey meant an extra end was required. With
both skips to play, the jack was with 4 inches of the end of
the mat, and a wall of bowls in front. Andrew is down by one
shot, and his first draw is close, but drops off end of mat.
Neil is under the head with his first but still holds one. Andrew
draws his final to hold, but it's off to the side of the head.
Neil takes the decision to run it off, but is too tight, rattles
the inside wall of bowls but pops a black up to nick the shot
and win 6-5.
Semi Final 2
Clophill (Susan Savage, Doreen Painter, George Savage) v Turvey
(Lyn Hurren, Roger Albery, Keith Cockings)
Turvey were out the gate in this match, quickly leading 5-2 after
5 ends. A single saw Clophill close to 5-3 then Turvey took 4
shots on last 2 ends to ease away to a 9-3 win.
Final
Barton (Carol Still, Garth Hemmings, Neil Rixon) v Turvey
(Lyn Hurren, Roger Albery, Keith Cockings)
The Final was looking close, but on the 5th end Turvey held a
7-2 lead. A single to Barton reduced the score to 7-3 but this
was no reflection on some very tight ends and some excellent
shot making by both teams. End 7 saw Turvey took a single to
restore their 5 shot lead, at 8-3, but Barton were strong on
the next end and a 2 saw them in with an opportunity at 8-5 down,
but they'd need a big last end.
Both leads tickled the jack back
and when Garth edged it further back for Barton to hold 3. Roger
was a little short leaving Neil a chance to draw in for 4 which
he did. Keith's first wood just dropped off the end as Neil then
undercut his into the head. Keith had either a very hard draw
or to run his bowl in, but he narrowly missed it, and Barton
took a 4 to win grab an unlikely looking 9-8 victory.
Congratulations to Barton on their win and well done all for
another excellent day's bowling. Many thanks also to all for
your raffle prizes and our competion organisers for their hardwork

Pairs 2024/25
Sunday 26th January saw 27 Pairs
drawn into 6 groups with 3 byes. The group winners and 2 best
runner- up would qualify for the Quarter Finals.
Group A
At the halfway point the Westoning pair Jill Ellis led the group.
Another win and a draw saw them into Knockout Rounds with Peter
Webster (Tod) runner-up on 5pts would that be enough?
Group B
Cherry Brock (Tod) pair were were winners of all 4 games leaving
John Blythe (Bar) on 6pts but with a very good shot difference
(+35) a good possibility of going through.
Group C
Jim Greaves (Silsoe) led the way here, with 4 wins, leaving Angela
Little (Wes) on 6pts but with -6 shots will that be enough?
Group D
George Savage (Clp) and Keith Cockings (Tur) were very close.
The Turvey pair were on 6pts and +8, waiting on Clophill's final
game. That finished with an 86 victory for Clophill, leaving
them also on 6pts, but only +5 shots, leaving them as runners-up.
Group E
Andrew Hatton (Tur) took 4 straight win,s with all the others
in the group beating one other. Runners-up Keith Porter (Woo)
were on 4pts, and unlikely to get through.
Group F
Patricia Ball (Col) playing with Viv Whyatt Routh (Woo) were
tied on 6 pts with Carol Still (Bar), but managed to get through
with +9, to the Barton pair's +2.
The 2 best runners-up were John
Blythe (Bar) and George Savage (Clo), joining the group winners
in the knockout rounds.
Quarter Finals
Jill Ellis (Wes) v Andrew Hatton (Tur)
Both pairs were undefeated so something had to give. Westoning
were 5-3 up after 4 ends, but took the next 3 ends with 5 more
shots to win 10-3.
Cherry Brock (Clp) v P Ball (Col/Woo)
After 3 ends the mixed pair had eased to a 5-1 lead, but a 3
on the 4th end closed the gap the game up to 5-4, only for Clophill
to lose the final 3 ends scores. The game finished 10-4 to the
mixed pair.
Jim Greaves (Sil ) v John Blythe( Bar)
Again, this started close. After 3 ends Barton led 3-1, but the
4th saw a 4 to Silsoe and then another 4 as they eased to a 10-3
victory in 6 ends.
Keith Cockings (Tur) v George Savage (Clp)
After 4 ends Turvey held 4-0 lead but a 4 shot 4th end to Clophill
saw the game level. A 2 to Turvey on the 5th end was then countered
by Clophill with two singles to tie the game at 6-6, requiring
an extra end. Clophill took a single on that end to slip through
7-6.
Semi-Finals
Jim Greaves (Sil) v George Savage (Clp)
At the 4th end, after exchanging 3 singles to lead 2-1, Silsoe
took a 4 to go 6-1 up. The 5th end saw Clophill gain 3 shots
back to trail 4-6, but 2 singles to Silsoe were enough to get
them into the final.
Jill Ellis (Wes) v P Ball (Col/Woo)
After 4 ends the mixed pair had eased to a 5-1 lead, but a 2
on the 5th saw Westoning close to 3-5 down, only for them to
lose 3 shots on the next, and trail 3-8. Into last end, a 2 was
all Westoning could gmanage, sending Col/Woo pair into the final,
8-5 victors.
Final
Viv Whyatt Routh (Wootton) & Patricia Ball (Colmworth)
v Jan Webbley & Jim Greaves (Silsoe)
The final looked like it was going to be close from the start,
as after 3 ends the teams were tied at 4-4. However, Jan and
Jim proceeded to take 6 shots over the next 3 ends to lead 10-4.
The 7th end saw a big swing in the game, as Viv and Patricia
took a very huge 5 to only trail 10-9, then take a 2 on the 8th
end to lead 11-10. The final end saw the leads very close in,
to a jack that had been moved off centre, Silsoe held 2 shots
but a very deft draw through a tiny gap saw Patricia and Viv
over the line 12- 0 winners.
Well done to our wiiners and all who played for an excellent
days bowling.

Singles 2024/25
Sunday 10th November saw 39 entries
in the Singles at Barton le Clay. There were 8 groups of 5, with
a couple byes due to illness. The group winners would go straight
to the Quarter Finals.
Quarter Finals
Tony Duke (Bar) v George Savage (Clp)
Tony opened up with a single then lost a 4 on thesecond end.
He regained a single on 3rd only to lose another 4 shots. Trailing
9-2 after 5 ends, George eased his way to a 10-3 victory.
Keith Cockings (Tur) v Mick Rogers (Tur)
This was going to be close as club mates knew each other's games.
And after 4 ends they were tied at 3-3, but a decisive 4 and
then a single to Keith, saw early handshake at 8-3 after 6 ends.
Peter Belcher (Bar) v Mathew Hatton (Tur)
After 3 ends Matt held a 4-1 lead, but Pete then got a single
to make it 4-2. However, over the next 2 ends Matt picked up
a 3 then a 2, to win 9-2 after 6 ends.
Kate Tilcock (Tod) v Jim Greaves (Sil)
Jim took 2 singles but after the next 4 ends Kate had amassed
7 unaswered shots to lead 7 -2. A pair to Jim on last end saw
final score 7-4 to Kate.
Semi-Finals
Mathew Hatton (Tur) v Kate Tilcock (Tod)
After 4 ends there was just one shot between them, Matt leading
3-2. That extended slightly to 4-2, before Kate fought back on
the sixth with 2. With the score at 4-4 it all came down to a
last end shootout. Kate and Matt were both drawing close but
Matt only just nicked a single to win 5-4.
George Savage (Clp) v Keith Cockings (Tur)
These were two very experienced players, so after 3 ends it was
no surprise that the score stood at 2-2. George edged ahead with
two singles to lead 4-2, but a single to Keith meant another
last end shootout. At 4-3 down Keith was close to the jack and
managed a 2 to win 5-4.
Final
Keith Cockings (Tur) v Mathew Hatton (Tur)
Two Club mates into the final, and this was a clash of age and
youth. Matt took a single on the first end, but the bowls were
all crowded around the jack. After 4 ends Keith had a 3-1 lead,
Matt was having no fortune, every touch of the jack went against
him, 7 more shots to Keith in next 4 ends saw a handshake at
10-1 after 8 ends.
Congratulations to Keith this is his 3rd County singles title
in a row, quite an achievement, and his 6th Singles title overall.
Well done to all who took part on an excellent days bowling,
and many thanks to the organisers at to all who brought Raffle
prizes.
