Bedfordshire Fours Competition 2013

The County Fours took place on a snowy Sunday, so firstly well done to all for turning up.

The twelve teams were in two groups of 6 with the top two going from each to qualify .

There were some close matches in the groups but the semi-finals saw the Colmworth four of Mike Walker playing Ann Denton's mixed four from Toddington, with the second being David Whitfield from Toddington playing Keith Cockings from Turvey.

The first Semi saw Colmworth victorious by 9 shots to 4, while the other was a close affair with Toddington edging the match 8-5 (promise no mention of David’’ wickey’’ Whitfield oops I did).

The Final
Colmworth were represented by Pat Bunch, Brenda & Peter Bol and Mike Walker while the Toddington four were Roy Hawkins, John O'Brien and Gill & Daivd Whitfield.

The first end was a little wayward but Colmworth picked up 2 shots while the 2nd saw the Colmworth skip in trouble but managing to hold shot after his last wood, only to see a running bowl take his shot out and roll in for a single to Toddington, 2 – 1 to Colmworth.

The third end saw Toddington score 3 shots on a wayward end of bowls, taking them into a 4-2 lead.

The fourth saw Toddington holding three when the Colmworth skip tried the ‘’If in doubt give it a clout‘’ option, with some success taking two shots to level the score at 4-4.

The 5th saw a single go to Toddington to regain the lead, but it was the sixth end which was pivotal. A fantastic bowl from the Colmworth skip saw them take 4 shots and jump into an 8-5 lead.

After that they picked singles on both the 7th and 8th ends to take a 10-5 lead into a final end which was a little wild but Toddington could only pick up 2 shots to finish 7-10 down.

Well done to the Colmworth Four.

The Final of the County triples was Between defending Champions from Turvey Janet Cockings, Paul Hurren and Mick Rogers and the triple of Roy Hawkins and Gill & David Whitfield from Toddington.

The first end had the skips with a bowl each to play when the Turvey triple moved the jack back from holding shot to concede a three. The second end saw the Turvey triple bounce back with a well taken 4 and go 4-3 up.

On the third end disaster, as Toddington took the jack off to make it 6-3 to Turvey.

A great opening wood from the Turvey lead on the fourth end was never beaten and with two more alongside, a 9- 3 lead was established.

However the fifth end saw Toddington skip roll his last wood in for a three to reduce the deficit to 9-6. But Turvey picked up a single on the sixth end after some wayward bowls by both teams to take the score to 10-6.

The next two ends saw Toddington take back a single on each to bring them back to10-8 down with one end to go.

The final end was a little nervy as both sides knew what was at stake. Toddington held one shot with the skips each left with a wood to play, but unfortunately they could not turn it into two and force the Turvey skip to bowl his last wood as Turvey hung on to win 10-9 and successfully defend the trophy.

The Final looked likely to be close with two strong pairs and with the Lilley pair trying to defend their title.

The first two ends saw singles being shared so 1-1, on the third end with the jack pushed to the end of the mat Sharon unfortunately took it off so 3-1 to the Clophill pair.

A dramatic fourth end saw the jack knocked to the side of the mat giving the Clophill duo 3 shots but with a bowl left each George takes the nearest Lilley bowl out to hold 5 shots which Sharon reduced to a 3 with the last bowl, 6-1 after 4 ends.

Two great drawing bowls saw the Lilley pair pick up two on the 5th end and single on the 6th so it was now 6-4 to Clophill duo.

The 7th end saw the jack moved again to the end of the mat despite a great effort to draw the shot George's bowl fell from the mat leaving the Lilley Pair with 2 shots and making the score 6-6 with two ends to play.

The 8th saw the Clophill pair pick up 2 with the last bowl of the end so it was now 8-6 up and one end to go.

The last end saw some wayward lead bowls both a foot through so it was all down to the skips. George drew a perfect draw and despite all efforts to move it picked up a 1 to win 9-6.

The Final of the Bedfordshire Singles was a tense game with two extremely good bowlers contending it was always going to be close.

After seven ends of close bowls with only singles being conceded on a very tricky new county carpet Keith held a 5 -2 advantage over Harold, but the eighth saw a change of pattern with Harold picking up 3 shots now it was 5-5 with an end to play!!!

With both struggling to find a good line it was going to the wire with a bowl left each Keith held two shots Harold narrowly missed the jack with his last bowl to leave Keith as the Champion for 2012 .
